University for Development Studies: the applicant's brief

6 findings
  1. The short answer

The University for Development Studies is a public university in Ghana with a multi-campus structure and central administration in Tamale. It suits applicants who want a public institution tied to northern Ghana and who are comfortable checking programme options directly with the university.

  2. What you can study

The institution is a multi-campus university with its central administration at Tamale. Its wider mission was created with the northern regions of Ghana in mind, including Brong Ahafo, Northern Region, Upper East Region and Upper West Region. The programme catalogue is not published in the information available here, so confirm the current subjects and degree options on the university website.

  3. Getting in

International applicants should apply through the university’s official admissions process and check the entry requirements, document list and deadlines on its website. Because the available information does not publish subject-specific entry rules, the safest step is to confirm the exact requirements with the admissions office before applying.

  4. What it costs

The university does not publish tuition fees in the information available here; confirm the current international student fee directly with the admissions office. Living costs in Tamale and other campus locations will depend on housing, food and transport choices, so budget separately for those.

  5. Coming from abroad

The language of instruction is not published in the information available here, so confirm it on the official website before applying. If you are moving from abroad, check visa requirements, the admissions timeline, campus location for your programme and whether the university has a separate process for international students.

  6. How it compares

Among Ghana’s 30 universities, UDS stands out as a public, multi-campus institution with a central administration in Tamale rather than a single central campus model. It is a practical choice for applicants who want a public university with a regional focus in northern Ghana, but they should compare programme availability and admissions details directly before deciding.

Written from this university's catalogue entry and its cited encyclopedia summary. Figures are only shown where the institution or a cited source publishes them β€” always confirm fees and entry requirements with the university itself before applying.

Overview

The University for Development Studies, popularly known as UDS, was established in 1992 as a multi-campus higher education institution with its central administration at Tamale. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the four northern regions of the country in mind. These are the Brong Ahafo Region, Northern Region, Upper East Region and the Upper West Region. The Wa and Navrongo campuses were later converted into autonomous Universities.
