  3. Getting in

International applicants should apply through the university’s official admissions process and check the current entry requirements on the official website. The available information does not give country-specific admission rules, document lists, or deadlines, so confirm those directly with the admissions office before applying.

  4. What it costs

The university does not publish a tuition fee range for international students in the available information; confirm the current rate with its admissions office. Living costs will depend on housing, transport, food, and personal spending in Raleigh, North Carolina, so budget separately for those expenses.

  5. Coming from abroad

The language of instruction is not stated. Before applying, confirm whether your intended programme is open to international students, what English-language evidence is required, what visa documents you need, and whether the university offers any support for arrival and enrolment.

  6. How it compares

With 2,515 universities in the United States, Shaw University sits in a very large national market, so its smaller published offer makes it different from many broad-spectrum institutions. Its main distinguishing point is its identity as a historically Black university in Raleigh and its limited set of diploma-level programmes.

Written from this university's catalogue entry and its cited encyclopedia summary. Figures are only shown where the institution or a cited source publishes them — always confirm fees and entry requirements with the university itself before applying.

Overview

Shaw University is a private historically Black university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded on December 1, 1865, Shaw University is the oldest HBCU to begin offering courses in the Southern United States. The school had its origin in the formation of a theological class of freedmen in the Guion Hotel. The following year it moved to a large wooden building, at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets in Raleigh, where it continued as the Raleigh Institute until 1870. In 1870, the school moved to its current location on the former property of Confederate General Barringer and changed its name to the Shaw Collegiate Institute, in honor of Elijah Shaw. In 1875, the school was officially chartered with the State of North Carolina as Shaw University.
