Tsukuba University: the applicant's brief

6 findings
  1. The short answer

Tsukuba University is a public university in Japan that offers master's and doctoral study. It suits students looking for graduate-level programmes in areas such as international relations, public policy, economics, business, and digital management.

  2. What you can study

You can study at master's and PhD level. The listed programmes include Master of Arts in International Relations, Political Science, International Development, Economics, Public Management, Public Policy, Master of International Public Policy, Master of Business Administration, Master of Digital Management, and PhD options in Economics, Public Management, and International Relations.

  3. Getting in

International applicants should apply through the universityโ€™s official admissions process and check the website for entry requirements, required documents, deadlines, and any programme-specific conditions. The university website is http://www.tsukuba.ac.jp/.

  4. What it costs

The university does not publish a tuition fee range; confirm the current cost with its admissions office. Expect living costs in Japan to vary by city and personal spending, so check accommodation, transport, and daily expenses separately before applying.

  5. Coming from abroad

The language of instruction is not stated, so confirm it directly with the university before you apply. Also check visa requirements, document translation rules, application deadlines, and whether your chosen programme has separate entry steps or supporting materials.

  6. How it compares

Japan has 571 universities, so Tsukuba University sits in a large national higher-education system. Its size in the application market is unclear from the published information, but its profile is focused on graduate study rather than broad undergraduate provision, which may suit applicants who want a narrower set of master's and doctoral options.

Written from this university's catalogue entry and its cited encyclopedia summary. Figures are only shown where the institution or a cited source publishes them โ€” always confirm fees and entry requirements with the university itself before applying.

Overview

The University of Tsukuba is a national research university in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. Chartered in October 1973 as Japan's first "new concept university" with the Tokyo University of Education as its parent institution, it traces its origins to the first normal school in Japan, established in Tokyo in 1872, which gives it one of the oldest institutional lineages of any Japanese university. It is one of the pre-war government-established universities and, together with Hiroshima University, one of the two successors of the former "universities of literature and science".
