United States Student Work Rights 2026

International students in the United States can work under F-1 rules while studying, with on-campus work allowed during the academic year and more options after one year. After graduation, OPT can extend work time in your field, with a longer route for STEM students.

F-1 visa holders may work on campus during classes and full-time during breaks. Off-campus work is possible after one academic year, but only with the right authorization through OPT or Curricular Practical Training (CPT).

Students must keep F-1 status and follow the work rules attached to it. That means any internship or training role off campus needs prior approval before work begins.

After graduation, F-1 students can apply for OPT to work in their field of study for up to 12 months. This post-study option is the main path for staying employed after finishing a program.

STEM students can apply for a 24-month OPT extension, which can bring total practical experience to 36 months. The application must be submitted within the required post-completion time frame.
